TV & Movies are shaping the wedding industry this year…Bride’s are taking the iconic era of film and using it as a style trend/decor for their weddings.  And there are two very unique entertainment productions this year that are at the forefront of wedding design inspiration.  First, there is the box office movie premiere of The Great Gatsby with leading man, Leonardo DiCaprio and with leading lady, Carey Mulligan.  As I take a look at this movie and it’s era, the 1920’s, I start to think of things or ideas that will illustrate a great wedding design board:

  • the design era, the 1920’s
  • Women accessories – pearls, fashionable headbands, fashionable hair clips, fur wraps, evening gloves, cigarettes in fancy cigarette holders, fans, brooches
  • Women’s attire – sheer dresses, dresses with fringes at the bottom, fur wraps, pantyhose,
  • Men’s attire – Brooks Brother 3 piece suits, colorful ties
  • Men accessories – cigars, canes, wing-tipped shoes, their mustache
  • The Venue – very ornate hotels with chandeliers and crystal accents, deep red color drapery and heavy furniture, (the Mayflower Hotel of Washington, DC)
  • Decor – feathers, chandeliers, the furniture – deep reds and golds and black, lace, pastel floral arrangements, antiques
  • The Entertainment – swing bands or big bands, cigar stations

Second, there is the television series MAD MEN with leading man, Mr. John Hamm (as Mr. Don Draper – oh I love him ladies!!!).  Set in 1960’s New York, the sexy, stylized and provocative AMC drama Mad Men follows the lives of the ruthlessly competitive men and women of Madison Avenue advertising, an ego-driven world where key players make an art of the sell. From the hairstyles (up hair dos) to the men and women’s fashions (pencil skirts and Brooks Brothers suits) in this AMC TV drama, you will be captivated not onlymad men by the show but by the true inspiration of fashion style.  As I take a look at this movie and it’s era, the 1960’s, I start to think of things or ideas that will illustrate a great wedding design board:

  • the design era, the 1960’s
  • Women accessories – pearls, up-do hairstyles, cigarettes (regular)
  • Women’s attire – the pencil skirt, dresses with big bows at the collar or ruffled collars, dresses flared at the waist, the clutch purse, red lipstick, bright-colored dresses
  • Men’s attire – Brooks Brother 3 piece suits, colorful ties, straight leg pants
  • Men accessories – cigarettes, ties or bow-ties
  • The Venue – dark wood panel walls, oversized sofas, restaurant style chairs, tulip tables and chairs, black and white checkered floors (Maggiano’s restaurant ballrooms)
  • Decor – Tiffany blue, black and white, yellow, gray, retro style chairs or ghost chairs
  • The Entertainment – bands, cognac & martini stations
