There’s just something about summer that makes you want to slow down and be with your people. The sunshine, the fresh air, the laughter; it all creates the perfect setting to reconnect in a way that feels easy, natural, and joyful.

At Signature Concepts, I always say that a family reunion isn’t just another event, it’s a chance to be intentional about coming together, celebrating where you’ve come from, and creating memories that will carry forward for generations.

And honestly? Outdoor family reunions are one of my absolute favorite events to produce. There’s so much room for creativity, connection, and fun.

If you’re thinking about planning one this summer, here are a few of my go-to tips to help you make it truly special and truly yours.

START WITH THE RIGHT VENUE

The venue sets the tone for everything, so this is where you want to begin.

Outdoor family reunions can be beautiful in a variety of spaces:

  • State parks with oversized pavilions are perfect for large, laid-back gatherings
  • Private venues, like barns or properties with expansive outdoor space, offer a more elevated and curated experience

This part is especially personal for me; my own family has been hosting our reunion at the same state park for 76 years. It holds deep meaning because it was the first state park to allow Black families to gather and fellowship. That history, that legacy… it makes showing up each year even more powerful.

No matter the type of venue you choose, here are a few non-negotiables:

  • Secure the space for the full day so your family can relax and not feel rushed
  • Make sure there’s a backup plan for inclement weather, like a covered pavilion or indoor space
  • Confirm there’s enough room for activities, dining, and just enjoying each other

The right venue doesn’t just hold your reunion—it helps create the experience.

MAKE IT MORE THAN A DAY, MAKE IT A WEEKEND

When family is coming in from different cities (and sometimes different countries), one day just doesn’t do it justice.

I always recommend planning your reunion for at least two days so you can really enjoy each other without feeling rushed.

Day One: Fun, Energy & Connection
Let this be your upbeat, interactive day—especially for the kids and teens.

Think:

  • Friendly sports competitions (kickball, relay races, basketball—you name it)
  • Fun, interactive group activities that bring everyone together
  • Creating teams by family branch to spark a little playful competition

And don’t forget, end the day by naming a “winning family”. Trust me, the bragging rights will last all year!

This day is all about laughter, bonding, and breaking the ice.

Day Two: Meaningful & Memorable
This is where you slow things down and really honor the heart of your family.

  • Plan a more formal outdoor meal or dinner
  • Build in time for storytelling and sharing family history
  • Recognize and celebrate the people who make your family special

Some of my favorite moments to include:

  • Honoring the oldest family member
  • Saluting those who have served in the military
  • Celebrating family members in healthcare or first responder roles

These are the moments that stick with people long after the reunion is over.

LET THE FOOD TELL A STORY

If you know, you know, food is the glue of every family gathering.

Be thoughtful with your menu. This is your chance to bring tradition to the table.

  • Include family recipes that have been passed down
  • Serve dishes that everyone remembers and loves
  • Highlight those “signature meals” that instantly feel like home

You can even share little stories about the dishes who made them famous, where the recipe came from. It adds such a personal touch and turns a meal into an experience.

BRING IT TOGETHER WITH A THEME

There’s something powerful about visual unity, it instantly creates a sense of belonging.

  • Choose a family color theme
  • Create custom T-shirts with your family name, crest, or a meaningful phrase

It may seem simple, but it brings everyone together in a visible way and it makes for amazing photos.

KEEP EVERYONE CONNECTED WITH A REUNION WEBSITE

Organization is everything when you’re dealing with a large group.

A family reunion website makes things so much easier by giving everyone one place to go for:

  • Event details and schedule
  • Travel and lodging information
  • RSVPs
  • Updates and announcements

It also gives you a place to share photos and memories afterward, which keeps the experience going even after everyone heads home.

A FINAL THOUGHT

At the end of the day, family reunions aren’t about perfection, they’re about presence. They’re about taking the time to gather, to celebrate each other, to honor the legacy you’re part of, and to be intentional about staying connected in a world that moves so fast.

This summer, be intentional about how you bring your family together. Choose a meaningful space, create moments that matter, and don’t forget to enjoy it all.

And if you’re ready to bring it all together in a way that feels effortless, elevated, and deeply personal, you already know, Signature Concepts is here to make it happen.

Let’s create something unforgettable.
